PROJECTS

Living Art Farm has also organically grown as a base camp for many people travelling through, wanting to learn and work on township projects. From organic gardens to development work, many visitors have shared their own talents, skills and knowledge on different angles of sustainable development, as well as playing an active role and experiencing what has worked here in Africa, and also more importantly what can be learnt from Africa.

Masiphumelele Centre for Peace Project – Masi is the closest ‘township’ to Living Art Farm ( 15 minutes drive ) and has approximately 35 000 residents, consisting of both formal and informal settlements. Many people from the rural areas come to Masi to find work in the area, so there is always a constant flow and change of people and environment. There are few ‘green’ areas where children and the youth can spend their time and few extra mural activities. With this is mind a few responsible students from the University of Cape Town, got together to think of ways that they could share their skills and creativity with the community. Every Saturday, a handful of students and  other willing and able volunteers, spend quality time with the children, working on a now established and thriving organic garden, cooking up delicious meals with what is available from the garden, building a toilet block, so that the children have somewhere ‘ to go’. Vuyiswa, a local youth leader from Masi, has also started a programme at the local school, where children are taught about the value of values and being leaders in the world. The programme is part of the Earthchild project ( www.earthchild.co.za ) which aims at a holistic model of development for schools, which benefits learners, teachers, parents and communities.

There are many such projects in different areas, as well as in the rural areas. It is a beautiful opportunity to meet amazing people doing inspiring things, and getting to know more of the local wisdom and culture.
